HIV Plus magazine in a recent article points out that according to the CDC, people on medication who are virally suppressed and have adequate immune responses are not at a higher risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19. However, factors common in some people living with HIV, in particular co-morbidities, do greatly increase the risk of poorer outcomes.

"Well thought-out plans for protecting vulnerable populations need to be proposed and carried out through state and federal recommendations and mandates," stated Dr. Roscoe Moore, former Assistant Surgeon General, Board Member of the Global Virus Network of The Institute of Human Virology and member of the Germinator Scientific Advisory Board.

Regular cleaning of places people living with HIV frequent will no longer be sufficient in protecting those most vulnerable to COVID-19. Effective sanitizing and disinfecting services will be required. These service providers will need to adapt new procedures that, through remediation procedures, will lessen the possibility of people becoming infected. Employing effective remediation of surfaces exposed to COVID-19 should be a priority along with other prevention methods.

One currently available method uses hypochlorous acid, this is a very powerful hospital grade disinfectant and sanitizer. Derived from naturally occurring minerals, it kills a wide range of bacteria and viruses on hard, non-porous, environmental surfaces without the use of harsh chemicals or fumes. It meets the AOAC germicidal spray standards for Hospital Grade Disinfection and is on the EPA N List of products determined to meet the criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.The second step is the application of the Shield, a water-based quaternary ammonium compound that imparts a durable bacteriostatic finish to a wide range of non-food contact surfaces. It is EPA-registered as effective against mold, mildew, algae and odor-causing bacteria. This method, performed by Germinator and Disinfection, should be evaluated for use at AIDS service organizations and other public spaces frequented by at higher risk individuals.
